SIMONE SHAILES who graduated from Central Saint Martins MA this year, who also won a Chloé Scholarship and more recently the L'Oreal Professionnel Fashion Design award has reproduced her graduate collection for Topshop.

It represents something of a high street first to reproduce a fresh graduate's collection for the buying public and could well pave the way for future designer x high street collaborations. The collection features the distinctive chunky loopy knitted dresses and capes as well as the wide metal plate belts to contrast with the soft textures.

Susie Bubble: How did the collaboration between you and Topshop come about?
Simone Shailes: I met with them after applying for Topshop New Generation Sponsorship at which point they proposed the collaboration, which I was delighted about!

"AN ART PIECE YOU CANNOT BUY" says Olaf Breuning about his Sand Sculpture

The official public opening of Art Basel Miami Beach is in a few hours, but the satellite shows around town are already up and running, says the NYTimes journalist Mark Ellwood, and: The Sagamore Hotel – which has a year-round arty edge thanks to owner Marty Taplin showcasing his private collection onsite – has another public art project under way following last year’s Spencer Tunick-directed mass strip-off. The impish Swiss artist Olaf Breuning, tapped as this week’s guest creative, is ramping up the raunchiness with an abstracted 150-ton sphinx-like sand sculpture of a reclining woman. “Miami has something, not sleazy or cheesy about it, but you see people walking around in very tight bathing suits, big breasts, plastic surgery so I thought I’d make something about the relationship between sexuality and art history,” he said.

A fleeting masterpiece, it will vanish within days, eroded by wind and sea, but Breuning is not worried. “I’m very proud to be making an art piece you cannot buy. In our time, it’s actually really perfect.” Don’t tell that to the dealers when the fair opens tomorrow.
